Idaeon Project

A band based in Nicosia, Cyprus, weaving raw rock energy with the emphatic storytelling of folk.

About the Band

A sound born from the earth and shaped by memory.

Idaeon Project was initially born from the creative encounter between Vaggelis Gettos (lute, vocals) and Hugo Enrique Olivos (drums). Gettos' folk influences — rooted in Cretan music, the dynamic rhythms of Greek traditional music, poetry, and historical references — met Olivos' deep knowledge of metal and his Latin American cultural background. In 2021, the two musicians began developing original material together, gradually shaping a sound in which these seemingly distant musical worlds could coexist.

The band's name draws inspiration from the Idaean Cave (Ιδαίον Άντρον) on Mount Psiloritis in Crete, a place where mythology, history, and successive cultural traditions converge. According to Greek mythology, the cave is associated with the upbringing of Zeus, who was hidden there from his father Cronus. Over the centuries, the site accumulated multiple layers of sacred and ritual significance, reflecting different periods, beliefs, and cultural practices. This layering of meanings resonates with Idaeon Project's own artistic approach: an aspiration towards a kind of "whole" music, in which no single tradition or genre stands alone but becomes part of a broader, multilayered musical direction. The name thus reflects the band's understanding of music as a space where different histories, sounds, cultures, and forms of expression can overlap without losing their distinct identities.

The duo was soon joined by Cypriot singer and musician Nama Dama, with whom they gave their first performances in Cyprus. With Mimis Sandalis joining on double bass, the band took the form of its first trio. This line-up recorded and released Idaeon Project's self-titled debut album, Idaeon Project, in December 2022.

The album brought together an international group of guest musicians. World-renowned multi-instrumentalist Efrén López contributed hurdy-gurdy, while virtuoso musician Loïc Bléjean recorded uilleann pipes. Marina Katsari (clarinet), Rebecca Katsaris (trombone), and Panayiotis Larkou (trumpet) also contributed to the recording. Alexis Yiangoulis, who would later become the band's double bass player, recorded electric and acoustic guitars and was responsible for the album's mixing and mastering.

Following the album's release, Idaeon Project further developed its musical identity through an intense period of live performances. The band toured Greece twice, performing in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, and Anogeia, while also appearing at major events in Cyprus, including the Rialto World Music Festival.

Following this period of concerts and touring, Alexis Yiangoulis joined Idaeon Project on bass, opening a new chapter in the band's trajectory. Together, they performed at DownTown Live, Nicosia's iconic rock venue, in November 2023. The renewed line-up further expanded the group's distinctive and dynamic creative dialogue, generating the material for its second album, Rous, due for release on October 17th, 2026.

The new album broadens Idaeon Project's musical universe through an eclectic gathering of distinguished musicians from Cyprus and abroad. Cypriot musicians Antonis Antoniou, Andry Eracleous, Giorgos Kalogirou, and Sophia Constantinou contribute vocals, alongside Bruno Tomasello (Italy) on saxophone, Charis Panayiotakis (Greece) on lyra, and Loïc Bléjean (France), returning on uilleann pipes and flute. The album also incorporates spoken poetry, recited by Marina Katsari (Cyprus), Christos Darachtsis (Greece), and Stefani Symeou (Cyprus).

Through this evolving constellation of sounds and collaborators, Idaeon Project continues to explore the meeting points between Cretan and Greek musical traditions, metal, Mediterranean and Latin American influences, poetry, and history. Rather than approaching tradition as a fixed inheritance, the band treats it as living material: something that can be dismantled, reassembled, and brought into dialogue with seemingly distant musical languages. In this sense, the idea embodied by the Idaean Cave remains at the heart of the project — a search for a music made not from a single source, but from multiple layers of memory, geography, culture, and sound forming a new whole.
